ENVIRONMENT

Environmental policies are a central matter of attention of RTR’s operations. Thanks to the emission-free energy generated by our photovoltaic plants, RTR saved 240,000 tons of CO2 emissions in 2017 which equals the amount of CO2 absorbed by over 6 million trees. The electricity produced from RTR’s portfolio of plants in 2017 was equivalent to the power needs of over 170,000 households in Italy.

RTR’s commitment to environmental protection goes beyond legal and regulatory requirements. For example, a green space with plants is put in place around each of RTR’s plants. This “green buffer” minimises the visual impact of the plant and favours continuity of the landscape. It also provides an environment for local fauna and micro fauna.

Equivalent of CO2 Emissions Saved Thanks to RTR

The quantity of CO2 emissions saved is equal to:

50,000

Vehicles driven in one year

100 million

Liters of fuel consumed

150,000

kWh electricity used for household use in one year

250 million

KG of coal burned

HSE CERTIFICATIONS

“For RTR, health and safety at work as well as environmental protection are key values of our business which we continuously transmit to employees, service providers and all visitors of our plants,” emphasises Enzo Matticoli, head of RTR’s HSE department. The integrated HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) Management System of RTR has been certified again by Bureau Veritas Italia, an independent sector specialist, in April 2018.

RTR’s HSE Management System is based on structures, responsibilities, procedures and resources which are specifically developed for the management of HSE aspects and has been certified in accordance with the requirements of international standards: OHSAS 18001:2007 (Health and Safety) and ISO 14001:2015 (Environment).

This acknowledgement further demonstrates RTR’s focus on issues related to Health, Safety at work and Environmental Protection, which have always been fundamental business values, as demonstrated by RTR policies. At RTR, every day we work with great dedication to plan, implement and review procedures, to test and take action to ensure continuous improvement. The shareholder’s commitment is real, as RTR is one of the few in the photovoltaic sector to have an autonomous HSE department. The results from 2016 speak for themselves to confirm the company’s efforts.

Social Responsibility and Community Involvement

In addition to being a primary producer of emission-free, renewable electricity, RTR has the objective to support social improvements as well. In pursuit of this goal the company launched a series of social sustainability actions. In Amatrice, one of the areas in central Italy most affected by the earthquake on August 24, 2016, RTR has supported the population through numerous initiatives. At the Amatrice l’Alba dei Piccolo Passi Association (Amatrice Dawn of Little Steps) devoted to school and psychological support for children and adolescents, RTR has donated books and intercultural education, as well as teaching material regarding psychomotricity and specific learning and person-related disorders.

Enzo Matticoli, head of HSE at RTR, personally delivered the teaching material during the Santa Claus event at Amatrice in 2016. “Several of our colleagues have friends or relatives living in Amatrice,” says Matticoli, “so we wanted to help them personally. We will continue to do so also through future projects because it is so important for them to see we remain in contact and available.” RTR employees also raised funds to support the Associazione Radici Pojane (Pojane Roots’ Association), which has been set up to support post-emergency interventions such as shelter, heating, first-aid and reception facilities in the Amatrice area.
At Rovereto, RTR has supported the Intercity Ramblers project, in partnership with the Ubalda Bettini Girella ONLUS association. Intercity Ramblers is an educational site for disadvantaged teenagers in the northern area of Rovereto, where laboratory activities, study aids, field trips, meetings and socialising are taking place. Families are also welcome in this space, with facilities such as Italian lessons for women, and a counselling center.
